The Altes Land was hard to pass through for many centuries. The waterways served as traffic routes. The harvest was transported by barge. And from the small ports, the Altländer traders drove to Berlin and further.
Due to the right of the youngest heirs there were many “leaving heirs”. The older siblings took up other professions. They became traders or skippers and marketed or shipped the Altländer fruits.
